1.0 out of 5 stars WAY too much hand holding, 5 Aug. 2017

I played leaf green and emerald 'back in the day' and lost interest in the franchise after that. Having recently got a 2DS XL I picked up this game to see if pokemon had anything new to offer. I'm not impressed, unlike the classics this game CONSTANTLY holds your hand, it restricts you to a tiny area and still gives quest markers. This completely eliminates exploration, a staple of JRPG's. They could have replaced the ability to walk around with cut scenes between battles and the game would be the same.

Secondly the battle system now TELLS you which moves are effective in battle instead of letting you work it out through experimentation. This eliminates any player skill from the game. You don't have to know the type matchings any more as it just tells you.

Lastly - the bottom screen pokedex has eyes which are constantly blinking in your peripheral vision, to me this is very distracting and I'd really like a way to disable it.

If you are a Pokemon fan this is worth a buy for sure it is all in all a great game and will provide a long and splendid story experience, there are a ton of reviews out there so I wont go to in depth. however the only few cons are that it is not a fully fair battle system and at times the AI does get more goes than you which can be extremely frustrating.

The game in total can last as long as you want it to, with training of Pokemon lasting weeks and months, online battles and also a new challenge tree mode which makes for very hard AI to beat post game. the ultra beats section is fantastic and provides a good new story line for future games while also allowing you to catch new Pokemon that are very different from all seen before,

More land to explore than before and the graphics are great for the DS, the battle dynamics are given a good shake up so it will provide a good change for long running fans however is easy enough to pick up for new comers to the game It... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars It's okay. Nothing more, nothing less., 22 July 2017

When I first heard of this game, I wasn't sold on the new way this game's story would progress, with the gyms being replaced with the Island Challenges and what-not, but I still bought the game to see how it was like and to support this fresh approach to a now-stale formula. However, the new style really didn't click with me.

I don't really hold a high opinion of the newer 3D pokemon games (Eg. X and Y, Omega Ruby, etc.) because they felt either extremely watered down or, in Omega Ruby's case, seemed to make the game it was trying to recreate more boring and too easy. Unfortunatly, this game doesn't break this downward slope for me. The characters were not enough to keep me hooked to this game, which led me to drop this game and let it gather dust pretty early into the story.

But don't get me wrong, the game itself is not awful to any extent. It's just I feel as if what they kept is stale, and what they added was either unnecessary or hurt the game more then it... Read more
